What is important to keep in mind would be that the right forklift for you personally is one that does the work you will need, reliably and at a minimum of expense. For 90% of buyers this could be an over-all purpose, LPG powered forklift with a capacity of 1.5 to 3 tonnes. They are the most popular varieties of units obtainable in Australia, together with good reason. Think about them like a Holden Commodore, reliable and versatile, capable of being found in a multitude of applications. But by no means will they be the sole sort of units available.
Before you start shopping, the standard questions you must answer relating to your forklift requirements are:
What surface or environment?
Indoor, outdoor, gravel, concrete, mud/grass? Generally, container handling equipment on Gravel suitable for indoor use only, batteries and rain don’t mix. Accordingly, electric units are made around these parameters, with low ground clearance and low profile, longer lasting tyres. If you’re will be outside in the yard for more often than not, you may want to consider an enclosed forklift, or otherwise one using a roof and windshield, particularly if you’re within an area rich in rainfall. Will be driving over crossovers onto roads, or older speedhumps or potholes? Choose a forklift with high ground clearance, and pneumatic tyres which will absorb bumps and uneven ground better. In case you are working indoors for more than a few minutes, diesel forklifts are probably not advisable, the majority of the state industrial safety regulations don’t approve their use within a factory. Therefore, LPG is considered a far more general choice, capable of working indoors and outdoors easily. Cushion tyres are simply suitable for indoor use, however they are very hard wearing and stable. Solid tyres will absorb bumps better and last a long time (with regrooving), but can be somewhat unstable on uneven surfaces. Pneumatic tyres are cheap to exchange and very cushioning on gravel, mud and bumps, but wear out faster than the other types.
How high are you looking to lift?
This is certainly, really what forklifts are for. To lift goods and move them, either into racking or onto trucks. A lot of people just need to lift one metre off the floor, and virtually any forklift you can get 78dexmpky do that. Others have racking, and if you do, appraise the topmost rack and add 200mm to allow the base of the pallet to remove the rail. Which is the lift height you should look for when selecting.
Forklift capacity is measured in tonnes. Generally there is some rounding up, eg a 2.5 tonne forklift will often be rated to lift 2.42 tonnes. In addition lift capacity decreases logarithmically with height and length. The larger a load and the higher it is going, the low the accessible capacity. Weigh and study the heaviest pallet or object you intent to lift, and measure your maximum lift requirements. All forklifts must have a lot plate that may determine whether your requirements may be met.
